Plastic in Cigarette Butts
Illustrator | Rawgraphs | Google Sheets
Cigarette butts are the most littered item in the UK and the least likely to be disposed of in bins. The plastic fibers in cigarette filters decompose slowly in soil, causing significant environmental harm. Through cigarette packaging, card design, and data visualization, this project aims to raise awareness among smokers and encourage proper disposal of cigarette butts to help protect the environment.
I used hollowed-out cigarette cases to show an estimate of the attributable cost of tobacco product waste (TPW) in six countries. I use microscopic plastics from cigarette butts as a background. I use a tree map to represent dropped litter types by count and binned waste items. Cigarette butts showed a very dramatic decrease, which means that a lot of people will be littering them.
